What Is Jon Stewart Talking About?

Jon Stewart Returns to His Old 'Daily Show' Seat - The New ...

Jon Stewart

This will be a brief post. I just need to rant a bit about this because it burns me so.

I have never been a regular watcher of Jon Stewart in either iteration of his show. Still, the little bit I have listened to, and the few statements I have heard him make led me to think that he was a bit more balanced than many of the other late night or evening talk show hosts, left or right. I recall his holding up a sign that read, “I disagree with you, but I’m pretty sure you’re not Hitler.” I also remember his announcing to the crowd at a show he and Stephen Colbert did on the Mall in D. C., “These are bad times, not end times!” He also got into it with his good friend, Colbert, over the origins of the COVID virus, being willing to consider that the virus originated at the Wuhan lab, contrary to the liberal talking points, and making Colbert none-too-happy. So, I figured, maybe he’s not so extreme as many of the others. In fact, there are many things I agree with Stewart on. Well, maybe some things.

Then I listened to a clip of his program from a couple of nights ago. He was commenting on many, many issues. But when he got to the Los Angeles riots, he asked the question (forward to 18:58 to find the part I’m commenting on), in reference to the military, “Why are they attacking Los Angeles right now? Why is the right so willing to tear our cities apart in this moment?” No, Jon. No. The military is not attacking Los Angeles. There have been no reports – zero – of the National Guard or the Marines in Los Angeles attacking civilians. They are there to protect federal buildings and personnel, and their mission has largely been limited to that. Have they detained people because those people were commiting crimes? Yes. Then they hand them over to the LAPD. But no one is being attacked by the military in Los Angeles. Also, it isn’t the right that is tearing up Los Angeles and other cities. It is the left. The riots, the bricks, the cinder blocks, the molotov cocktails, the defacing of buildings, the destrucion of businesses, the burning of cars, even assisting criminal migrants to escape law enforcement … all of this is being carried out by the left, not the right. Would the left limit their protests to peaceful protests, making clear their goals and their dissatisfaction with government policy, but making their points clear with signs and posters and chants, then there would be no National Guard or Marines in Los Angeles.

So, millions of people who listen to Jon Stewart are going to go away thinking that the military is attacking people in Los Angeles, and that the right is the side that is tearing up the city. All because Jon Stewart couldn’t or didn’t want to get his facts straight. That burns me.

I looked up on the internet: “Have the Guard or the Marines been attacking people in Los Angeles?” This is the AI answer that came up:

Yes, there have been reports of clashes between protesters and law enforcement, including National Guard and Marines, in Los Angeles, but there are no reports of the military attacking civilians. The military was deployed following protests against immigration raids, and they have been involved in securing federal buildings and personnel.

What’s up with that? The question was, “Have the Guard or Marines been attacking people in Los Angeles? and the first word in the answer is “Yes”? But then it later says, “but there have been no reports of the military attacking civilians.” So, if there have been no reports of the military attacking civilians, then why did AI answer “Yes” to the question “Have the Guard or the Marines been attacking people in Los Angeles?”

Does anyone have any idea where a person who only wants to hear the news without commentary or political bias can go? Anywhere? Anywhere?
