Congress Comes Through on Funding for CHIP … Finally!

I’ve written before about the threat to CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, because Congress for months failed to hash out a deal that would secure its continued funding. States were left holding the bag, paying for the program with whatever funds they had in reserve. Those reserves were running out. After months of anxiety and frustration over the childish tug-of-war Congress was playing with CHIP funding, our esteemed Representatives finally came through, and CHIP is safe.

Congress passed a deal that will fund CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, for six years. Because of this, children from families that cannot afford insurance will be able to receive the medical care they need and not lose their insurance. Failure to fund CHIP would have been a monumental disaster for millions of children. It amazes me that our Representatives in Congress were willing to use these children as pawns in the game of advancing their social and political agendas, agendas that had nothing to do with medical care for children. However, nothing about the current partisan rankor in Washington surprises me, anymore.

States were prepared to start sending out letters informing parents that their children were no longer insured. Thanks be to God they won’t have to, and everyone can breathe a sigh of relief … at least for the next six years!

Be Christ for all. Bring Christ to all. See Christ in all.
