The Chinese government has started demolishing churches without prior warning, using the excuse of urban development.

The Vatican and the Chinese government have been participating in talks aimed at reconciling the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Church, which is under the direct control of the Chinese government and is not permitted to have official ties with the Vatican, and the underground Catholic Church, which has refused control by the government, remained loyal to the pope and, as such, as endured on-going persecution over the decades.
