I am weary. I am weary and disheartened by all the bad news and multiple crises this country is facing right now. There was a time when I would use this blog to comment on all of it, even on a daily basis. But, I find it hard now to keep up. The disaster of Afghanistan. The allegations of treason against the head of the Joint Chiefs. The humanitarian crisis on the border. The continuous battle against COVID and the COVID restrictions. The partisan disaster that is Congress. Schools that are more interested in teaching politics and racial ideology than in teaching reading and math. The success of BLM, Antifa, the White Supremacists and, not least, our political and media elites in igniting a cultural race war. The effort to expand abortion and force taxpayers to pay for abortion.

The list goes on. I can’t keep up. But, I’ve not lost heart and I’ve not lost faith. My hope, after all, is not in men and horses, but in the Lord.

As such, it is my intention for the future to use this blog less as an opportunity to comment on the seemingly endless list of cultural, social, and political crises facing the present age, and more as a word of encouragement that, in spite of it all, Jesus remains the Lord of history and the victory is already won.

That isn’t to say I’ll never again comment on things political, social, or cultural. It is to say that I will give earnest effort to shift the focus from the bad news to the Good News. There are, after all, any number of blogs and news websites that focus on the bad news. We need to hear the good news, too. And, we need to hear the Good News, especially. I don’t want to be just one more curmudgeon complaining about how the world is going to hell. I would rather be a reminder of the hope embodied in the promises of Jesus.

Years ago, Fr. Daniel Berrigan, the Jesuit and peace activist, was being interviewed and he was asked what gave him hope. Was it the fact that more and more young people were joining the peace movement? No, Fr. Berrigan said. The fact that more young people were joining the peace movement was good. But, hope is something that keeps you going when you’re all alone. “What gives you hope, then,” he was asked again. “Only, this,” he said, “the promises of Jesus.”

I would like this blog to be a place where those who are weary of the bad news can come to receive a word of encouragement that our hope is in the Good News, in the promises of Jesus.

Be Christ for all. Bring Christ to all. See Christ in all.
