Senator-elect James Talarico of Texas
The Repubicans have taken a shellacking in the mid-term elections like none seen in decades. Even in Texas – TEXAS! – voters kicked out a three-term Republican governor who, by most measures, had done a pretty good job and elected to the Senate the first Democrate in four decades, and one who believes that God is “nonbinary” (of course, God is not sexual at all, so the comment makes no sense), believes that Mary, the Mother of God, should have had the right to abort Jesus, and that parents rejecting the gender identity of their children is child abuse. Wow!
While the Democrats might think the current election reflects the country’s devotion to their policies, the election was mostly a rejection of Trump. After all, why would you vote for the Republicans when Trump is president when you can shoot yourself, and your country, in the foot by voting for socialism, open borders, boys in girls locker rooms, no bail release of violent criminals, protecting gang bangers and cartel kings, at least the ones who are immigrants, via sanctuary city policies, all because the average price of gas is cheaper than when Biden was in office? Remember when Obama said that 2% GDP growth was the new normal? Last quarter, the economy grew at 3.4%, beating all expectations. The fact is, our economy is doing pretty blasted well, though you wouldn’t know that for the cynicism out there. Yes, gas prices are up because the war with Iran is still going on. But the price of a house has held stable, and grocery costs are up on some items and down on others. The bottom line is, we’re not doing badly. So, why the turn toward the Democrats?
One word: Trump! You love him or you hate him. Well, not exactly. Most people, I suspect, like some of his policies and dislike others. But the American people, in my estimation, are back to having their views too much influenced by the media, and the media hates Trump. Back during Trump’s first term in office, the Democrats and the media conspired mightily to destroy any chances of his having a successful administration. The Democrats for obvious reasons. But the media because the 2016 election demonstrated that the American people didn’t listen to the talking heads on the boob tube as much as those talking heads thought they did and thought they should. The media was all-in for Clinton, so when Trump won, it proved that the American people didn’t give a rat’s patooty what the media thought. That made them mad! So, after striving so hard to make sure Trump was the Republican nominee (under the theory that he couldn’t possibly win), they then turned their forces toward destroying his administration and securing his defeat in 2020. For three years the country endured the Russia-gate hoax. Millions of dollars wasted just to find out the whole hoax was orchestrated by the Clinton campaign. And the consequences for the Democrats when their corruption was discovered? They won the White House with a man who, by the third year of his administration, couldn’t recall the name of his Secretary of Defense.
Donald J. Trump, for good or ill, has been the dominating force in American politics for more than a decade now, even when he was out of office. The man controlled virtually every headline, week after week, month after month. He lived rent-free in every liberal journalist’s mind, and still does. The entire country has been focused on Trump, either for him or against him, since that fateful ride down the golden escalator. Perhaps this mid-term election will help prepare us to move on, looking forward to that day when Trump will be an elder statesman and someone else will take the mantle of the Republican party and dominate the news cycle. Not for another two years, though.
We’ll have to see what the Democrats can do. My prediction: they’ll mostly be obstructionists, hoping to make Trump a two-year long lame duck and not screw things up so bad for themselves that they blow the 2028 general election. Don’t count on it. If anyone can give the Republicans an historical drubbing like they just did, then lose all that political capital as quickly as they won it, it’s the Democrats. If James Talarico, Abdul El-Sayed, and AOC remain the face of the Democrat party, I don’t have much hope for them. They will likely take this victory and interpret it as, “They like us! They really, really like us!” That would be their downfall. The American people are fed up. They don’t like the Democrats. They just dislike Trump that much. In 2024, the Repubicans won big. This year the Dems won big. 2028 is anybody’s guess. But one’s things for sure: it won’t be Trump’s election to win or lose. And that will make all the difference.
I pray for my country.
Be Christ for all. Bring Christ to all. See Christ in all.
